Understanding Nigeria’s Geological Terrain: Nigeria is underlain by three dominant geological formations.

  1. The Basement Complex –
Composed of hard, crystalline rocks (e.g., granite, gneiss, schist), predominantly found in the North-Central and South-Western regions.
  2. Sedimentary Basins –
Characterized by layered rocks such as sandstone, shale, and limestone; typical in the Niger Delta, Chad Basin, Sokoto Basin, and Benue Trough.
  3. Volcanic and Younger Granites –
Found in the Jos Plateau and central Nigeria, often associated with complex water-bearing fracture systems.
Each terrain presents unique challenges and opportunities for groundwater extraction. Therefore, the geology beneath a proposed drilling site significantly influences the borehole’s depth, water yield, design, and long-term performance.
